The Portland girls basketball team defeated East Lansing, 61-55. The Raiders got off to a fast start by taking a 14-2 lead, but the Trojans battled back and took the lead heading into halftime by 4. After a rough start to the 3rd quarter, the Raiders found themselves down by 11 points in the 3rd quarter. But sharp shooting by Paige Spedoske, Summer Stopczynski and Malia Thelen cut the lead to 1 at the end of the 4th. The 4th quarter was all Raiders as the hot shooting continued with 3's from Malia Thelen, Paige Spedoske, Lilly Thelen and a huge three from Alexa Weber with under 2 minutes to seal the game. Portland was led by Malia Thelen with 18 points, Summer Stopczynski 14 points and Paige Spedoske with 13 points and (4) 3 point makes. The Raiders are now 5-0 and host Holt on Thursday night.
The boys traveled over to Carson City Monday night to play the Eagles. The varsity blew them out after winning last Friday night against Ionia. The entire team scored in the game winning by the score 74-17. Leading the scoring was Chris Battley with 19. Evan Gross had 12 assists in the game. The Raiders are now 5-1 on the season!
The JV Girls Basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 45-22 win at East Lansing. In a game where 10 different lady Raiders scored, Leigha Roberson led the way with 12 points. Allie Sutberry and Will Almy followed up with 8 points each. Alexis Hengesbach added 4 and Rylee Miller pitched in with 3. Next up is a matchup with the Holt Rams, Thursday at home. Tip off 5:30pm
The JV Boys basketball team entered the winter break with a 46-15 win over the Carson City Eagles. The Raiders were paced by Liam Wolfe with 12 points, Ethan Cassel with 8, and Brady Rowe with 7. The Raiders are currently 5-1.
The freshman girls traveled to East Lansing last night and won a close game, 32-27. Leading the way was Paige Weber with 9 points and Marisa Weber with 6 points. Madelyn Collins and Amber Vetter each with 5. Amari Adler with 3 points, and Madison Daggett and MaKayla Krizov each with 2. Izzy Honsowitz added some much needed intensity and defense to help the Lady Raiders. The girls went a perfect 8/8 from the line to help them pull off the close one. They are back in action on Thursday at 4pm at home vs Holt.
