The varsity girls basketball team opened their season with a win over Gull Lake, 51-43. The Raiders defense was solid all night with Summer Stopczynski, Malia Thelen and Lilly Thelen causing several deflections and multiple steals. Portland found themselves down at halftime 23-20, but rallied in the 3rd quarter to take an 8 point lead into the 4th quarter. Malia Thelen led all scores with 13 points and 3 steals, Lilly Thelen finished with 11 points, 4 steals and 3 assists, while Summer Stopczynski had a fine all-around game with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Kayla Weber also chipped in 6 points and Alexa Weber finished with 5 points. The Lady Raiders next opponent will be Olivet for their first conference game of the season on Friday night.
