Boys Golf Team State Finals Results

The Portland varsity golf team qualified to compete in the 2021 DIVISION 3 MHSAA STATE FINALS as just the eighth golf team from Portland High to do so. Played at one of more difficult MHSAA divisional state final course sites, The Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State University. The two day, 36-hole tournament set eighteen teams and eighteen individual golfers from six lower peninsula Division 3 Regionals against one another.

Very excited, proud and competitive Portland High Varsity Boy’s Golf Team began State Final play with the goal of attaining a top ten or better finish as a team. The Raiders struggled with pressures, nervousness of the competitive field of teams along with extremely unseasonable high temperature and humidity playing conditions especially on day one. Just as they did through the entire season, the team came back on day two and manage a better day of play and scores but fell just a bit short of their bid of a “top ten or better finish.” Portland finished the tournament ahead of six other teams in twelfth place with a two-day total of 695. The Raider finished sixteen strokes ahead of cross county rival and one of the six regional champions in Division 3 Lakewood. The Vikings finished in 13th place with a score of 711. Out of the 107 teams that began tournament play in Division 3, the GR Catholic Central Cougars captured the D3 Golf Championship with a team score of 623.

The experience and memories of qualifying and playing in the State Finals will be one that these golfers will never forget! They all experienced a “time of their life!”

The two-day scoring totals for the Raiders at State Finals:

Isaac Honsowitz (Sophomore) led the Raider scoring finishing with a great two-day total of 155 (which tied him for 13th place individually out of 108 golfers); Josh Rutkowski (Senior)put together two solid rounds to shoot a 172; CJ Miller (Senior)found things working better on day two to end with a 182; Carter Rosier (Senior) shot a pair of 93’s to go 186 and Luke Nobis (Senior) finishing his HS golf career with two-day score of 190.

This was an awesome, close-knit team of nine young men who worked hard and accomplished a lot together which would be the envy of many teams and golfers before them. Congratulations on a great season!
