Girls Varsity Tennis hosted Charlotte on Wednesday for another league dual. Portland adds another sweep to their league record, defeating Charlotte 8-0. Unfortunately, Charlotte did not have a full team, and had to default at 4 singles as well as 3 & 4 doubles.
Dropping only one game in 10 sets of play, Portland had flight wins from 1 singles Kayla Weller, 2 singles Alyssa Jack, 3 singles Adriana Krieger, 1 doubles Maura Lufkin & Corey Smith, and 2 doubles Kara Kraczon & Bella Virk.
Weather has not been a friend to tennis lately. Having rescheduled the league match against Ionia twice, Portland Girls Tennis was finally able to play on Friday. Proving to be more powerful than the quick storm that had the team scurrying to dry courts, Portland defeated Ionia 8-0. This is the fourth 8-0 league sweep for the team. The win definitely sends the message that this team is determined to repeat as league champs!
Friday's match was also Senior Night. The coaching staff and underclassmen took a moment to recognize the Varsity & JV players prior to beginning play. The attributes brought by the 9 Seniors this season are numerous! They are phenomenal young ladies with bright futures ahead of them and we will be sad to see them go once the season is over.
The JV Seniors are Bryna Adams and Marriah Lawler.
The Varsity Seniors are:
4 doubles Olivia Morrow
3 doubles Mya Collins & Xanthe Cross
1 doubles Maura Lufkin & Corey Smith
4 singles Autumn Shimer
1 singles Kayla Weller
Weller and Lufkin are 4-year Varsity players and Team Captains along with Corey Smith.
The League Tournament will be held at the Portland High School tennis courts on Wednesday, May 12.
On Saturday, the Girls Varsity Tennis team hosted a double dual with Traverse City St. Francis and Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep. The team went into the double dual expecting tough competition from the Division 4 #1 ranked St. Francis team. While St. Francis proved victorious, defeating Portland 6-2, the Portland team held their own. St. Francis has very strong singles players who gave Portland's singles players the toughest competition they have seen this season. Portland's doubles teams fared somewhat better than singles, winning two of the four doubles flights. The two losses should not deter those doubles players as they were close matches, despite the outcome! Overall, this was terrific competition for the team as it is likely we will see them again post-season.
Portland was back to business a few hours later when matched up with Kalamazoo Hackett for the second dual of the day. This match also proved for some close competition for the Raiders, but they ended up victorious, defeating Hackett 8-0. Special mention goes out to the Portland 1 and 2 doubles teams (Maura Lufkin/Corey Smith & Kara Kraczon/Bella Virk) as they are the only flights to win both matches! Lufkin/Smith were victorious defeating Hackett's 1 doubles who picked up their team's only win against St Francis. Impressive showing for 1 doubles!
Portland plays in the League Tournament on Wednesday (hosted by Lansing Catholic at the Portland Tennis courts).
