Portland Girls Tennis hosted St. Johns on Friday and added another win to their dual record, defeating the Red Wings 5-3. The winning match effort came from number 3 doubles team, Mya Collins and Xanthe Cross. Portland was at 4 wins and St. Johns at 3 wins while this doubles match went 3 sets. Collins & Cross, yet again, showed their determination in this 3-setter, winning the final set 6-1.
Other notable wins came from 1 singles Kayla Weller, 3 singles Adriana Krieger (defeating her opponent in a 1st set tiebreaker and then taking the second set 6-0), 1 doubles Maura Lufkin & Corey Smith, and 2 doubles Kara Kraczon and Bella Virk.
During a busy day of sports at Portland High School, the Varsity Girls Tennis team kept their focus on continuing their recent success. Hosting several teams who have qualified for and/or won state championships, Portland was determined to leave their mark as they battled and fought hard throughout a windy day of tennis. Bloomfield Academy of the Sacred Heart (ASH) eventually outplayed everyone, winning the tournament with seven of their flights winning flight championships. Portland placed 2nd behind ASH with three flight runners-up and one flight champ.
Medaling for Portland were 3 doubles runners-up, Mya Collins & Xanthe Cross, 1 doubles runners-up, Maura Lufkin & Corey Smith, and 1 singles runner-up, Kayla Weller. The long flight champion medal winner was 3 singles Adriana Krieger.
The team heads to East Lansing on Monday.
