The second of six divisional jamborees was played at the Maple Brook Golf Course in Charlotte yesterday afternoon. With COVID 19 protocols reducing the availability of the Portland varsity golf team by two golfers for yesterday’s match, the six player Raider lineup pull together to take a great, early season victory.
In yesterday’s six team jamboree, the margin of just one stroke was the difference between finishing in first place to third place. Proving again the well-known golf mantra, “that every stroke counts in stroke play golf.” Portland shot a team score of 190 to squeeze past Charlotte and Lansing Catholic who both had team scores of 191. Using the fifth score tiebreaker Charlotte earned second place and Lansing Catholic in third. Eaton Rapids finish in fourth with a 194, Ionia was fifth shooting a 216 and Lansing Sexton sixth scoring a 264.
Scoring for Portland was: CJ Miller with a four over par 40 earning match medalist honors; Carter Rosier shot a 49; Hayden Getchell carded a round of 50 and Owen Goodman finished with a 51.
Saturday Portland sends a five-player team to compete in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Invitational at Glenbriar GC in Perry. On Monday, the Raiders are expected to be back to full strength and will host Central Montcalm in a dual match at Portland Country Club.
The Junior Varsity team finished second. Eaton Rapids managed to cap off a 9-stroke victory over Portland to take first place with a team score of 161. The Raiders took second place with a team score of 170. Lansing Catholic's score of 178 earned third place. Charlotte posted a team score of 180.
7-Hole Scoring for the Raiders:
