After the postponement of two duals this past week, the Varsity Girls Tennis team finally got their chance to play this weekend when they travelled to Rochester High School for the first quad of the season. Facing some tough competition from D1 Rochester High, D2 Walled Lake Northern, and fellow D4 school, Grosse Ile, Portland played some great tennis despite the overall 4th place finish. Facing those D1 & D2 schools allows the team to be pushed a little more than expected. And D4 Grosse Ile is a team we often meet in the State tournament, so playing them now could be a benefit come post-season. While the team as a whole placed 4th, they certainly stayed in some matches and kept the overall team scores quite close. Rochester placed 1st with 14 points, Walled Lake Northern & Grosse Ile tied for 2nd with 12 points, and Portland remained in close pursuit with 10 points. The team scores certainly represent how well matched the four teams were. Portland did have 3 flights come home with medals. 1 doubles, Maura Lufkin & Corey Smith, were runners-up. 2 singles, Alyssa Jack, was runner-up. And our lone flight champion was 1 singles, Kayla Weller.
We have our season home opener this Tuesday versus Ionia.
