Portland Golf Swings Into Action, Ionia Co. Shootout Champs

Competing in one of Michigan’s longest running high school boy’s golf tournaments, the Ionia County Shoot-Out, the Portland varsity boys golf team recaptured the tournament championship. The eighteen-hole match was played at the Morrison Lake Golf Course. This time the mantra “that the golfers who are the strongest mentally and physically over their final six holes generally can score well” played favorably for the Raiders. With a very solid team score of 338, Portland finished seventeen strokes better than second place Lakewood’s 355 in earning first place. Belding took third place with a team score of 370; Pewamo-Westphalia shot a 375 and Ionia finished with 424.

 

Scoring for Portland was:  Isaac Honsowitz who shot an eight over par 78; CJ Miller carded an 84; Luke Nobis finished with an 87 and Carter Rosier completed the Portland scoring with an 89. Honsowitz and Miller both earned All-Tournament honors for their performances.

 

The varsity golf team travels to Charlotte on Thursday the 22nd to complete in the second of six CAAC White Division jamborees at the Maple Brook Golf Course.

On Friday, the varsity boy’s golf team sent a six player team to play in the Larry Judson Two-Player Scramble Invitational at Glenbriar Golf Course in Perry. Out of the fifteen team field, the Raider’s took fifth place. Portland’s three teams combined for total team score of 245. Williamston captured first place with a team score of 211; Haslett finished in second with a 219 and Bath took third place with a 228. Portland did sneak by divisional rival Lansing Catholic (with a 246) by one stroke and bested Charlotte (a 285) by forty strokes.

 

The team of CJ Miller and Isaac Honsowitz combined to finish with solid two over par 74 and just missed making the All-Tournament Team by one stroke; Hayden Getchell and Carter Rosier team up and shot an 85 and the team of Luke Nobis and Owen Goodman shot an 86.

 

The Raider’s return to action for the third time in as many days’ tomorrow at Morrison Lake Golf Course. There the Raiders will compete in one of Michigan’s longest running high school boy’s golf tournaments the Ionia County Shoot-Out (with teams from Belding, Ionia, Lakewood, Pewamo-Westphalia and Portland)

 

 

Portland JV Golf 2021- JV Jamboree 4/15/21 @ Maple Brook Golf Course

 

The Portland Junior Varsity boy’s golf team opened up 2021 conference play Thursday afternoon with a divisional jamboree played at Maple Brook Golf Course in Charlotte. Eaton Rapids managed to cap off a 3-stroke victory over Portland to take first place with a team score of 174. The Raiders took second place with a team score of 177. Ionia’s score of 178 earned third place. Lansing Catholic ended in fourth with a 181. Charlotte posted a team score of 182.

 

7-Hole Scoring for the Raiders was: Stone Peiffer who shot a 43 and Cadin Cross shot a 44; Austin Getchell & Tarren Walton carded a 45, while Ethan Rockey and Bryce Reynolds rounded out the Raider scoring with a 46 and 50.
