In these uncertain times where nothing seems consistent, I wanted to send a communication to the community about the impact this has had on our athletic programs and the rules that have been implemented as a result of the so unprecedented pandemic.  One thing that seems consistent is that none of us like COVID; none of us like wearing a mask; none of us think that this is an ideal situation.  None of us, including school officials, have had any input  on any of the rules or executive orders.  We just know that it is our responsibility as servants to the community to enforce and administer the rules, even though it’s not always fun.  There are many varying opinions on COVID 19 and all that has gone with it and no matter where you stand on all of the facts and opinions on this situation, we all can agree that wearing masks will definitely significantly slow the spread of ANY virus.  That is just a fact. It is also a fact that if we as a school or community have an outbreak, it could end all of our kids' events immediately and with no warning. This is a day to day scenario.  So, we are asking that no matter how you feel about the mask rule, you please do it for the kids. We are also asking that we adhere to the rules about spectators (two per player). I know it must be hard not to be able to see your kids at work when you’ve likely sacrificed so much of your time to get them to practice and extracurricular activities. I know that because my own kids play sports and I relish the ability to watch their hard work in action. However, I have to remember these are their events after all; their memories, their experiences, their very limited chance to take part in organized, formal athletic events.  I know as a former high school athlete how disappointed I would be to have my season, that I worked so hard for, taken away…it could all be gone in a minute.  Let’s all do our part for them and practice what we know can help prevent that sudden ending. 

The Portland Athletic Office prides itself on doing things the right way, following all the rules and regulations while still putting very competitive teams on all of the playing surfaces.  We hold ourselves accountable and hope that we are an example to other schools to follow suit. Winning the right way makes winning that much sweeter. Wearing a mask and limiting spectators has become the rules for the time being.  Let's show our Raider Pride and show everyone, especially our kids who we are being an example for, that we can follow the rules and still be the best we can be!  Thank you in advance for being part of the solution and not part of the problem.  Go Raiders!
