Varsity Golf Competes in Back to Back 18 Hole Tournaments

On Friday, the varsity boy’s golf team sent a six player team to play in the
rescheduled Larry Judson Two-Player Scramble Invitational at Glenbriar Golf
Course in Perry. The Raider’s finished in sixth place of the ten team event.
Portland’s three teams combined for total team score of 252. Haslett captured
first place with a team score of 218; Okemos finished in second with a 229
and Williamston took third place with a 237.
The team of Luke Nobis and CJ Miller combined to finish with an 82; Ethan and
Hayden Getchell teamed up and shot an 84 and the team of Jared Thomas and
Spencer Pohl shot an 86.
The Raider’s returned to Glenbriar Saturday with a five player
lineup to compete in the eighteen-hole, stroke play Dick’s Sporting Goods
Tournament.

Playing in less than twenty-four hours after finishing the eighteen-hole
tournament at the Glenbriar Golf Course in Perry, the Raider’s varsity golf
team returned to Perry on Saturday to compete in the Dick’s Sporting Goods
Tournament. This nineteen team tournament hosted some of the better division
two and three golf programs near Lansing. Playing in the small school
division, the Raiders completed the eighteen-hole event with a seven and
three record and scored the sixth best team score in the nineteen-team field
with a final score of 366. Williamston shot a 341 to take first place honors
in the small school division. New Lothrop took second with a 357. Almont
edged out Portland by one stroke with a 365 to finish in third.
The Portland highlight of the match was turned in the junior Zach Pier.
Playing in less than ideal golf condition, Zach shot a seven-over-par
seventy-nine to share both the small school and the overall co-medalist
honors with Williamston’s senior Luke Schafer (out of 89 other golfers). With
last year’s 2018 tournament at Glenbriar cancelled due to unplayable
conditions, Zach earned himself another place in the Portland Varsity Boy’s
Golf Record Book and at this tournament by achieving back-to-back individual
top honors.
In addition to Pier’s score, the Raiders got a 92 from senior Ethan Getchell
and a 93 from freshman Hayden Getchell. Junior Jared Thomas and sophomore
Luke Nobis both finished with 102’s.
