Portland Boys Varsity Soccer played two tough games this week to wrap up CAAC White play.
Varsity Soccer defeated Lansing Sexton on Tuesday in a "nail biting" match 3-2. The Raiders came out strong and were able to capitalize on two goals in the first 20 minutes of play. Lansing Sexton was able to adjust and held the Raiders from scoring for the remainder of the half. The second half got off to a late start as thunder delayed the start by thirty minutes.
The second half started as an even match and Sexton was able to put a lot of pressure on the Raiders offense. Sexton was able to draw a foul in the box and drew their first goal off of a penalty kick. Play stayed close and Sexton was able to get another goal with only ten minutes remaining. The game intensified even more as the game came to a close. With only three minutes left in play Johann Boettger was able to get a header over the Sexton goalie to put the Raiders up 3-2. Tate Dziewiatkowski and Florian Klindt scored the other two goals for the Raiders.
Yesterday the Raider faced Lansing Catholic for one of the most anticipated games of the season as both teams entered the game undefeated in league play.
Unfortunately the Raiders went down 0-1 in the opening minutes due to a redirected ball that hit one of their players in the hand that result in a penalty kit for Lansing Catholic. Goalie Anthony Kreiner had an amazing block on the PK but the ball was redirected back to the PK kicker who was able to put it back in the net.
The Cougars were able to score again only ten minutes later on a cross. For the rest of the half the Raiders were able to slow down LCCs offense and create a few opportunities of their own but just couldn't capitalize on their chances. The half ended with LCC leading 2-0. Portland was able to regroup a little in the second half and created a few more chances on goal. Mid way thru the second half LCC was able to connect for another goal from a corner kick. Down by three goals the Raiders continue to press and was able to score off a kick by Cameron Roof about thirty yards out from goal. The final score of the game was 3-1.
The boys held their head high after the game. Knowing that they gave it their all and play hard the whole game. This is the Raiders first lost on the season and they currently sit at 13-1 on the season. They finish 2nd in the CAAC White with a 4-1 record. Historically the program struggles in league play. Only winning one league game per season the last two years and not winning any the previous five years combined. This is a huge success for them and the program.
Boys Soccer will be in CAAC Cup play for the next three games. Games will be posted pending the Cup seeding tomorrow.
